Team GB are looking good ahead of London 2012

British boxers got their preparations for next year’s Olympics underway in fine style, picking up five gold medals at the test event at the ExCel Centre.

Natasha Jonas and Savannah Marshall won gold in the women’s middleweight and lightweight categories respectively, which is an improvement to be proud of for Marshall, who won silver at the World Championships in Barbados earlier this year. Jonas beat the world number two, Dong Cheng of China 16-10 in her final, while Marshall defeated Dariga Shakimova of Kazakhstan 13-10.

In the men’s competition, Martin Ward of England, Sean McGoldrick of Wales and Scotland’s Josh Taylor each won gold in their respective events. Ward, fighting in the lightweight category, comprehensively defeated Germany’s Eugen Burhard 10-5, while McGoldrick added another gold medal to the one he won at the Commonwealth Games last year by beating Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand 14-10 in the bantamweight final.

Taylor beat Anthony Yigit of Sweden 13-10 to win the welterweight title, while Fred Evans of Wales took the bronze medal in the same category.
