DeGale beat Wilczewski in Liverpool to win the title

James DeGale is on the verge of a world title fight after sealing the European Super-Middleweight title with a victory against Piotr Wilczewski in Liverpool.

DeGale was in his first fight since losing to rival George Groves in May, but showed his fighting class against Wilczewski, who had lost just once in 30 fights before the pair met, with the Polish fighter taking charge of the fifth round in particular, forcing a response from the former Olympic champion.

The fight could have been stopped in that fifth round, as the barrage of punches from Wilczewski caused DeGale to lose his hearing for a few seconds, but he responded well with “all the doubters out again” as he put it.

DeGale said afterwards that “I like a fight and I wanted to stand there and give it to him, which is what I did. He was a solid, seasoned pro and he came to fight. People doubted my heart but I’m a European champion after coming off that silly defeat to George (Groves).”

He could now challenge for a world title within three fights according to his promoter, Frank Warren, providing he can hang on to his new title.
