The showdown between WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and British and Commonwealth champion Tony Bellew has moved a step closer to becoming reality with promoter Frank Warren calling a press conference this week.
Warren is expected to announce that the fight, originally scheduled for May this year, will take place on 15th October at the ECHO Arena in Liverpool.
Bellew failed to make the weight in May having been brought in as a late replacement for Juergen Braehmer, and Cleverly subsequently beat an underprepared Aleksy Kuziemski to retain his title, and it now seems likely that the pair will come together this October.
The Cleverly camp are certainly keen for a fight with Bellew, with Nathan’s father and trainer Vince saying back in July that they “would fight him (Bellew) in a garden, there’s no problem there. It won’t make any difference to Nath or the result.”
It was thought that Bellew would fight Paul David in September but the members of both camps seem to have agreed to the fight, which will have the British boxing fans licking their lips in anticipation.
