Klitschko Forced Out of Title Defence

Injury means fight is postponed

Wladimir beat David Haye to win his world heavyweight title

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has been forced to pull out of his title defence against Jean-Marc Mormeck.

The WBA, WBO and IBF champion underwent surgery to remove a kidney stone, and had originally hoped that he would have healed in time to fight. However, upon his return to training, onlookers reported that he was clearly in some pain, and his coaching team and promoters pulled him out of the fight in Dusseldorf.

His doctor made the announcement after taking a look at the discomfort, and said “it would have been irresponsible for Wladimir to fight. Such an operation requires rest. Although the pain may have subsided by the scheduled fight time, he is weakened by the interventions and must take medication and rest.”

Frenchman Mormeck was scheduled to have only his third fight in four years at heavyweight level, having lost his world cruiserweight title to David Haye in 2007, the man Klitschko beat to win his title.

The fight could be rescheduled for March 2012, as the IBF rules state that Klitschko must defend his title within a certain timeframe, while Mormeck could fight another opponent in the meantime.
