A great friend of David Haye, Matthew Macklin now plans to show the heavyweight champion how it’s done by beating Felix Sturm in Cologne to win the WBA middleweight title a week before Haye takes on Wladimir Klitschko on 2nd July in what could be an outstanding week for British boxing.
Macklin was part of the same Great Britain amateur squad as Haye ten years ago, and was talking about how he was once lead astray by Haye on his first day with the squad.
The fighter from Birmingham said, “It was my first day with the Great Britain squad and I didn’t know anyone or any of the routines. David came round and suggested we go for a curry so I said OK. I wasn’t aware that we were supposed to sit down as a squad so thought nothing of it. I certainly got into trouble though!”
The road to the top has been a lot more difficult for Macklin than his old team mate, however, having changed trainers and promoters on regular occasions, and having seen big fights lined up, only for them to be scrapped for whatever reason.
Macklin, like Haye, faces an uphill battle to win the fight but he has all the talent required to surprise the German in his home town.
