Having been awarded the victory by majority decision in Las Vegas, Manny Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach have backed calls for a rematch, claiming the performance of Juan Manuel Marquez proves he is deserving of another shot at the WBO welterweight title.
Marquez dominated the third fight between the pair for the majority of the bout, and Roach admitted that the Mexican “has given us problems three times now, I do think he deserves a rematch. It was the kind of fight I don’t want to do again, but I think we have to.”
Asked if he would consider taking on Marquez again, Pacquiao said “Any time, any time. I am a fighter and my job is to fight in the ring.” While both parties on the Pacquiao side are accepting that a rematch is a possibility, they are looking to take on five-weight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr, but that has been put on hold following the American’s demands for random drug testing to be brought into the sport, seeming to question the integrity of his potential opponent.
As for Marquez, he has now lost two fights against Pacquiao and drawn one, with many feeling as though he should have been awarded the victory in both previous fights, and he showed a great account of himself in Las Vegas also, unlucky not to at least draw the fight.
