Floyd Mayweather Jr has been sentenced to 90 days in jail by a court in Las Vegas after pleading guilty to assaulting his former girlfriend in 2010.
In addition to the sentence, Mayweather has been fined $2,500 (1,600) and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service for the incident involving Jodie Harris. He will not have to answer felony charges of beating Ms Harris and threatening two of their children after agreeing to a plea deal.
Prosecutors said that because of his history, jail time was an appropriate course of action. “He continually gets himself into trouble, and he’s always able to get out of it,” said prosecutor Lisa Luzaich. “Essentially he has been jailed because he is who he is and he’s able to get away with everything. The judge said that she decided to jail Mayweather after he admitted hitting Ms Harris and threatening to make her “disappear” in front of the couples’ 9 and 10 year old children.
A jail term was deemed appropriate as fines were “of no consequence’ to the current WBC welterweight champion, who won $25million in the fight that won him the title.
The jail sentence means that he is likely to be released just two months before a major fight against Manny Pacquiao, scheduled to take place on 5th May 2012.
