Home town glory for Jamie McDonnell

European and Commonwealth Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell added the British title with a unanimous points victory against Stuart Hall.

In a keenly contested bout it was McDonnell who impressed the judges the most, scoring 115-113, 116-114 and 116-113, with Hall’s chances of victory slowly slipping away from him in the middle rounds making it increasingly likely that his only hope was an unlikely knock-out.

It was Hall who dominated the early rounds, landing several right-handers, but McDonnell began to find his feet in the third round and found some quality combinations to take charge of the fight.

McDonnell resisted the attempts from the previously unbeaten Hall, who had never gone 12 rounds in his career, and admitted that it was a tough fight but he felt in control throughout.

The Yorkshireman said afterwards “He didn’t really hurt me. I could see him winding up for some big shots but they didn’t really impact on me. He was a strong presence and he’s definitely the strongest fighter I’ve been in the ring with.”
