At 34-years of age, and having had one fight in the last three years, many would forgive Erik Morales for losing his hunger for boxing, and being a bit crazy to step into the ring against younger fighters, and the Mexican agrees.
Morales lost his last fight, pushing Marcos Maidana all the way back in April, and now faces possibly the hardest-hitting opponent of his career in Lucas Matthysse next month.
While Morales is as hungry as ever for the fight against the Argentinian, he has admitted that he isn’t his ideal opponent. When discussing his next fight with his management team, Morales was looking for a difficult opponent to prove to the world that he can still cut it at the top, but said that he “wasn’t planning for someone as difficult as Matthysse.”
He has also confessed to being “crazy to take on the fight”, but crazy about what he does, not that he thinks he has taken on more than he can chew, as reported in many papers in the United States.
The fight takes place on 17th September on the undercard of another huge fight, as the pair take to the ring before Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz do battle.
Mayweather’s promotion team, Golden Boy, are also doing the promotional work for Morales, and Richard Schaefer from Golden Boy believes ‘El Terrible’ will win his fight against Matthysse, calling Morales “a true definition of a modern day gladiator” and he will earn his title.
Should Morales beat Matthysse next month, he will become the first Mexican to win four different weight titles.
