Selby and Yafai Could Face 'Box-Off'

GB flyweight spot on offer

Posted Nov 02, 2011 by Chris White

A place in the British boxing squad for the Olympics is up for grabs

Having both reached the Olympic qualifying standard, British amateurs Andrew Selby and Khalid Yafai could face a best-of-three ‘box-off’ to decide who will take the British flyweight spot for the 2012 Olympics.

The pair will clash at the Great Britain Championships later this month, and, if required, a third meeting will take place at the Olympic test event at the ExCel Centre at the end of the month to decide the boxer who will represent their country next summer.

Welshman Selby narrowly missed out of automatic qualification, when he was narrowly beaten in the final of the World Championships by Azerbaijan, but he did recover to win the European title in June.

Yafai, from Birmingham, represented Britain in the Beijing games in 2008, but lost in the second round to Andris Laffita of Cuba, and would want to make amends in 2012.
