Weight Categories: Bantamweight

A look at one of the many different boxing weight divisions

Posted Sep 08, 2011 by Chris White

Bantamweights take their name from a type of chicken

Derived from ‘bantam’ chickens, this weight category is one above the lightest weight class, the flyweights, covering boxers between 115lb and 118lb, or 52.1kg to 53.5kg.

The first title fight in this category was way back in 1889, between Chappie Moran and Tommy Kelly when the weights were up to 110lb, before the British set the limit at 118lb in 1910.

The longest serving of the current bantamweight champions is the WBA Super Bantamweight titleholder Anselmo Moreno of Panama, who has defended his title on 8 occasions. Other title holders include Koki Kameda, (WBA Regular), Nonito Donaire (WBC and WBO), and Abner Mares (IBF).
