In the early days or organised boxing, the official weight limits for featherweights seemed to vary, depending on what country you were in, until eventually the authorities settled on the limit of 126 pounds in 1920, used by the British throughout.

The first fight referred to as a featherweight championship fight took place in 1860 between Nobby Clark and Jim Elliott, although the division only became accepted as an official weight division in 1889 following the match between Ike Weir and Frank Murphy.

The featherweight division is one of the most exciting in the sport, along with the heavyweights, and has featured some of the biggest names ever to step into a boxing ring.

The illustrious list includes the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales of Mexico, Britain’s ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed, Irishman Barry McGuigan, and Filipino Manny Pacquiao.
