One of the most competitive weight divisions

Floyd Mayweather made a name for himself at lightweight before moving up

Ranging between 130 and 135 pounds, the lightweight division is one of the most fiercely contested with so many of the sports big names competing at the various stages of their careers.

The likes of ‘The Golden Boy’ Oscar de la Hoya, Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez, and arguably two of the best boxers of a generation, if not all time, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao have all competed at lightweight level and gone on to become champions. The most notable British lightweight boxer is one who has a big future ahead of him, including a potential clash with Mayweather in 2012, Amir Khan.

Marquez currently holds two lightweight titles, the WBA Super lightweight and WBO lightweight belts, while Brandon Rios holds the WBA Regular lightweight championship. Miguel Vazquez is the current IBF lightweight champion, while the WBC championship is currently vacant.

From the lightweight division, many boxers choose to step up to light welterweight, challenging themselves against more aggressive, scrappy boxers who enjoy getting stuck into their opponents. The lightweights usually earn themselves a name and then use it as a springboard in the career to go on to greater things – particularly the likes of Mayweather, Pacquiao and Khan.
