About the Boxing Club

Based in Leith's Academy Street, Leith Victoria AAC, was founded in 1919 and is Scotland's oldest boxing club still in existence.

•The club numbers among its former members the only Scottish brothers to win Olympic boxing medals, bantamweight George McKenzie in Antwerp 1920 and flyweight James who won silver in 1924 in Paris.

•Leith Victoria boasts world champions such as flyweight Johnny Hill and super-featherweight, Alex Arthur.

•George Smith, who refereed Muhammad Ali v Henry Cooper in 1966, was a former flyweight with the outfit in the 1920s.

•The club was founded by Leith shipyard workers in 1919 along with Scotland’s first Lonsdale belt winner, flyweight Tancy Lee.
